Despite my misgivings about how my husband would manage, we made a trip to the cabin last weekend. I've been putting him off and putting him off, and since I'm the one who's driving right now, I've had a fair amount of control over the situation. I was worried about just getting him into the cabin over uneven ground, let alone the steep and unforgiving wooden stairs, but he wore me down and we took off.
We saw a couple of Sandhill Cranes on the way in.
My daughter came with us. It had been a little over 2 months since I'd seen her and I was missing her. She was missing some outside contact and the freezer meals, so I planned menus around things we could easily freeze, that she could take home with her. As usual, there was a breakfast burrito-making session and I think we've found a recipe that's better than what we've been using, which was basically made up anyway.
We had rain the first day we were there. Rain is my happy place. Maybe if that was all I ever got, I'd get tired of it, but we just don't have nice rainy days that often.
Yep. Best. Thing. Ever.
To make up for the breakfast burritos, my daughter then put me through this. This is the theoretical "recovery" day of this program, which she has done for 6 weeks. Let's just say it's a little insane, but I stuck it out for the whole thing.
Making breakfast burritos and working out is exhausting, so there was a little napping...
....which was also reflected in the dog's afternoon attitude....
....poor worn-out things. We hadn't even made it to the river at this point.
My daughter also loves to play Skip-bo and she's really good at it, so the games tend to be a little on the cutthroat side. No mercy is shown.
We were able to get my husband up and down the stairs using this tried and true technique.
Out solar batteries aren't holding a charge very well and need to be replaced, so I had to do battle with this beast. I lost the first round, but fortunately just at that point, the sun came over the mountain and hit the panel, and I was spared. I did have to make it work the next day, however, but Evan had been in and gotten it going to make sure it was going to work, so I think just by virtue of the fact that it had already been going once, I was able to get it done.
I did win the battle of the washing machine hook-up, though. I haven't been able to run a load yet because I'd have to start the generator first, but hopefully those solar batteries are getting changed out this weekend and it won't be as much of an issue.
My daughter and I did make a trek to the river with the dogs. The water is high-ish, but certainly not nearly as high as it's been other years.
We were all glad to get out and get some fresh air.
Gus was even game for a little Fetch-It-Up.
Then right before we left, my daughter drew eyebrows on masking tape and stuck them on Gus. He was less than impressed. It was great to get a change of scenery, enjoy being in the woods, spend some quality time with The Girl, have a couple of "I am woman" moments, and have no mishaps.
Gus’s eyebrows are hilarious!
