My feelings about Christmas have been well-documented in the past. Long-time readers will know that I struggle, not with the concept of Christmas itself, but with the frenzy and commercialism that lowers it to its basest form. I have a problem with Christmas appearing before Halloween in stores. I have a problem with the "BUY ME NOW!!!" mentality, and honestly...it's just a ton of work.
Over the years I have gradually adjusted my life so I can tolerate the holiday. I sing and play Christmas music...a LOT. I participate in a live nativity which is happening this week. And most of my decorations these days other than the tree and stockings, consist of my collection of nativities.
I have them all over the main area of my house.
They keep me focused (hopefully) on the peace and joy of the season....
....rather than the things I've come to really detest about it. It helps my mood for the most part.
My family understands this about me, I think. I have several that have been gifts from far-flung places when my kiddos were on their church missions.
I do tend to add to the collection each year. That's the purpose of a collection, right? This one is from Africa. I can't remember the specific country right off.
This one is from Kenya.
This one I got at a local craft fair.
This one's my favorite this year, though. It's an early Christmas gift from Collin's family, made by my daughter-in-law, Alison.
She does a beautiful job wood-working. Every year when I unpack the bin that has the nativities, it's like seeing old friends again. I love the feeling I have when I place all of the pieces...all of the characters focused on the Baby Jesus, and I'm grateful for the feeling I have as I pass them again and again as I sometimes frantically run from one thing to another during the season.
"For unto you is born this day...."
Unto me and unto you. That's what truly makes if the most wonderful time of the year.
The nativity Alison made is stunning!

Good variety, Ma! I wonder if we could put together a taxidermy nativity...
