Because I've had a lot of visitors this past few months, and because that means I've done a lot of laundry, and because I was running low, I decided I needed to make another batch of homemade laundry soap. I've linked you up with the recipe I use and like.
Now, the "recipe" says this makes about a year's worth of soap for about $40. That wasn't the case for me. Maybe it's because I have 6 kids and their families coming and going and staying and leaving. Maybe it's because my family hunts and therefore generates twice the quantity of really dirty laundry. Maybe it's because I give the stuff away by the quart bagful to some of those kids that come home to visit. Whatever the reason, I made my first batch in mid-May of last year and made this batch about a week ago, so it didn't last me the year. The only difference between that batch and this is that I included some of those fancy fabric softener crystals to it. I don't know if that's worth it or not, but we'll see.
As for cost, I've got my receipt for ingredients right here and you can see that even with the addition of the fancy Purex crystals, I came in at under $40. If you add the 6% Idaho sales tax to my total, it comes out to be $33.33, which I consider a bargain when a box of name-brand stuff that lasts me maybe 6-8 weeks costs half that already. So I'm sticking with this, at 2 Tablespoons per load of revolving door/messy hunting laundry. I got the 2-gallon jar at Target. Love Target. I really do.
I will tell you, however, that as I was mixing this up in a plastic garbage bag on my kitchen counter, my eye-guy husband came in and schooled me on the fact that the ingredients for this soap are bases, as opposed to acids. If you get acid in your eyes, it can damage the top layers of your cornea, but if you get something base in there, it will eat clear through. I will wear eye protection in the future when I put this together because I believe that if someone goes to school for 12 years to learn something, they probably know what they're talking about. That, and I want to keep my eyeballs, thank you very much.
Thanks for sharing :)

Yes. Definitely keep your eyeballs! Good work on the huge quantity of laundry soap.

When my detergent runs out, I’m wanting to make this too. I’ll just have to come visit so I can make a Target run to get one of those cute jars! : ) Love Target!
