Ending the trip recap with a story about the food. We've already established that my husband would try any kind, any time. I'm a little more selective. That said, there's plenty of great food to try in Victoria itself and the other places we wandered around while we were there. I am not a food blogger, but we had some interesting experiences this time.
We are still mourning the demise of our all-time favorite restaurant there, Chandlers. They've put another restaurant in there....British food. We stopped and read the menu, but weren't impressed by what we saw. On our way to the fort and lighthouse, we saw a place called The Six Mile Pub. I'm not sure where it's 6 miles from, but the food was good. My husband actually took this picture of his lunch to send to the boys. It's a prime rib reuben and he like it a lot. I had a salmon burger and it was made with a fillet of salmon, not ground up or minced fish. This was the start of an Omega 3 trend that continued through most of the trip. We thought about eating there again during our stay, but decided to keep trying new places.
We had dinner one night at a place called The Blue Crab. Not surprisingly, it specializes in crab and as you can see, my husband came, saw and conquered. This was our last evening there and by this time I had eaten salmon prepared 2 or 3 different ways, consuming enough Omega 3's to save my life several times over, so I had some Arctic Char instead, although it's not too different from salmon. My medical boys made the snide comment that perhaps mercury poisoning would counteract the effects of the Omega 3's.
The biggest food event, however, was our trip to the Deep Cove Chalet. At the suggestion of the hotel concierge, we had dinner here after wandering around Sidney. It's easily the fanciest restaurant we've ever eaten at, and if we were ever to venture there again, we'd probably pack a little differently, since we were just a hair under-dressed, but the staff was just too polite to say anything. We felt a little like the rednecks trying to measure up. It was here that I became one of those annoying people that feels compelled to photograph every aspect of their dinner. Everything was just so pretty. This was just the butter they brought out for the bread.
We opted for the "complete menu" dinners that had everything from soup to dessert included with a couple of choices for every course. I started with clam chowder that came in its own tureen with greenery under it. My husband's smoked salmon had little real pansy blossoms on the plate.
Then there was the romaine salad. No, I didn't eat the anchovy fillet, much as I'm all over those Omega 3's. It had some kind of creamy vinaigrette on it that was really yummy.
My husband had some oysters. I'm not a fan.
And my ever-present salmon. There were little crispy potato scales on it and some kind of wonderful sauce. However, I took issue with the bed of some kind of sauerkraut it was sitting on. In my mind, that just didn't belong on the plate.
This was dessert. See what I mean? Everything was just so pretty....and delicious.
Even the outside of the place was beautiful.
mmm!
