I mentioned last week that we spent some time at the cabin last week, during Bryce's Spring Break. We had planned to in on Monday, but that didn't work out...long story about college class registration, midnight registration times, and confusing emails about exactly WHEN a certain son could actually access said registration...at midnight.
In any case, we didn't get on the road until Tuesday morning, when this is what we saw out the dashboard of the truck as we headed toward the trailhead. It was snowing and continued to snow off and on that entire day. In all we had about 3" of new snow to ride in on.
We took the rhino, because weather can be fairly changeable in Idaho at this time of year,
and took off for the cabin. It was rough going because in some places you had just the new snow covering the ground and in the shady spots, you might have 8" of really hard-packed, rutted ice-snow, so up and down we went, across the frozen tundra.
You can see that Ollie was in the sled behind. There are only 2 seats in the rhino, so Bryce took a nice comfortable spot in the back on the ice chest.
We enjoyed this view the rest of the day, with snow showers coming and going. You can see dirt around the bases of the pine trees here, so you know there really wasn't all that much snow up there. A foot to 18 inches deep in the shady places, but bare spots in the sunny ones.
My husband grilled our dinner in the middle of one of the random showers that went through. It's awfully pretty when it happens:
Coming out was a different story all together. We'd had a day of sun and much warmer temperatures on Wednesday, and Thursday morning we started out early, wanting to get on the trail before what snow there was got really soft and mushy.
In contrast to going in, this is how Bryce looked when we got back to the trailhead....covered with dirt that had been thrown up by the rhino tracks.
It was a totally different world we came back to.
As I said, the weather can be a little changeable in Idaho this time of year.
You were brave, heading into the storm like that on the way in! The cabin is beautiful, as always.
