When we had Ollie out on the deck eating his food one morning, we heard all kinds of commotion from a nearby tree.
There was a Blue Jay in it just shrieking at Ollie. Now, I was totally unaware that Blue Jays even existed in Idaho, but apparently they do and not only that, they stick around in the winter. Not only THAT, but they can make that circling vulture shrieking sound that you hear in the movies when somebody it wandering in the desert. No kidding.
So when Ollie was done and we brought him into the house, this bird decided he was going to raid the food stash, and I decided I was going to get a picture.
He flew on and off the railing several times, yelling while he was at it.
Then he got a little braver and ventured onto the deck. "Are you lookin' at me? Are YOU lookin' at ME???"
And then I think he tried to pull the old Jedi mind trick, "These aren't the droids you're looking for....as I swipe some food."

what a character! Do they stick around in warmer weather? I hope I get to meet him!

That doesn't look like any blue jay I've ever seen. Ours are white and blue. They squawk alot but aren't dark like this. ??

That bird should not be shrieking at our sweet Ollie!

We now have blue jays and mockingbirds making nests in our trees and bushes, let the shrieking begin. They will both dive bomb you when those eggs hatch, plus play the injured bird on the ground if you are really too close.

Blue jays are really the most beautiful birds - and yes - they stay year round in their range - when they aren't shrieking - they can make the most amazing french horn sound - just beautiful - but I guess it is in their calmer moments ....
